If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Buying a Windows Mobile device can be really expensive. For starters, there are models that are not subsidized by your local carrier and even if they were, they still cost a lot more than most of the phones in the market. Then, there’s the question of loading (installing) software onto the device for you to use because, as you will soon find out, the application on Windows Mobile ain’t exactly the best out there.
But what software should you install? And do commercial software trump freeware in every scenario? That depends as you will soon see. These 111 freeware have been selected from a list of thousands and if a software you like is not here, let me know in the comments below. They have been sorted in alphabetical order for your convenience. So if you are ready to save some money and go the path of freeware, be sure to check out this list of free software.
The software listed below are just an introduction. You will find a short description beside each software as well as a link to download it. Over the next couple of weeks, I plan to do a more in-depth analysis on each of these software so you know just why they made it to this list. In the mean time, enjoy

If you noticed, there are instances whereby a certain need can be filled by more than 1 application listed above. For example, if you are looking for an application to help you blog on the move, moBlog and Pocket SharpMT are 2 applications that serve the same purpose. The reason for this is they are both great applications and one might fit a certain type of mobile blogger better than the other. So while they might serve the same purpose, they are pretty different in terms of features so I would recommend that you check them both.
In addition, not all applications might work with your phone. That’s because, each application has their own requirements. For example, you can’t be using NoniGPSPlot if you do not have access to a GPS device (built-in or external). Or in certain cases, an application might only work for a version of Windows Mobile but not yours. Be sure to check first before installing to prevent any problems later on.
The applications listed here are just a summary of the hundreds of thousands of freeware applications that are available for Windows Mobile. Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be telling you more about each application, sort of like a mini review of each application so you can find out more about it. Or if you can’t wait, you can always go ahead and download them first to give it a go.
What do you think of this list?
Update on 4/2/08: WMWiFiRouter was removed from the list as it is no longer freeware and replaced with emoze.

Awesome list! And congratulations on the new site!
Thanks
Great list of software! And to make it even better it’s all free!!! I have tried several of the applications listed, but look forward to your mini-reviews. Thanks for the information.
You’re welcome. That’s the great thing about freeware
Wow, that list is long!
It would be a great list to mention in the weekly links roundup, if it wasn’t posted on My Today Screen already!
Hehehe. Well you could mention it in your site’s weekly news round up if you decide to have one
Nice list, certainly has a few items I’d never heard of before. I hope, though, that you keep checking the links, for already at least one of them is dead (YouTube Mobile Downloader). All the same, good work!
Thanks for mentioning that. It’s not dead actually, I had used the wrong link. It’s working fine now.
Great list! But you should include IFONZ, FRING and ZUMOBI. These are all FREE and USEFUL applications.
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I could have included them but I totally forgot about it. I guess that’s the problem with freeware: there are just so many of them that you tend to miss some of them out in such situations.
Nice list - some new ones for me here, so thank you.
Another app you might want to consider: Slick (http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=slick) which is a simple free multi-protocol IM client.
Thanks for the heads up on Slick. I have not heard of it, to be honest with you, but I will be sure to check it out.
Thanks for the List!
I have great freeware starting with E:
Emoze.
Best push mail solution for WM
http://www.Emoze.com
Oh yeah that’s a good one. Can’t believe I missed that. I used Mail2Web actually for Exchange.
What a great way to launch the new site. Well done to Doug and Tariq
This is going to be one awesome site, keep up the good work guys!
Thanks Mr E. Don’t forget to take part in the prize giveaway
Does a free trial count as freeware? The WMWiFiRouter only comes with a 15 day trial. after that it’s 15 euros. Thanks for all the good info though.
By right nope. I thought it was freeware because it was when I first tried it out but it seems like this freeware has gone the way of commercial sadly. Thanks for pointing it out.
The link for Blue Tooth Audio doesn’t connect to a live download link. I keep getting a “connection was reset” error on the download, and the link to the developer’s page produces a 404. Are there any other sources for this program?
Thanks for the great post!
Thanks for the heads up Tappet. I have updated the link to a tested link that works.
Got it! Thanks for the update!
You’re welcome
here is another list with free applications

Thanks for the list. Yup I did use that as well for consideration of this list.
F- Firefox
You forgot the best browser for both Windows and Mac.
How does that improve Windows Mobile?
Last I checked, Firefox was under way for Windows Mobile, but had not been released as yet. I agree that it is a fantastic desktop browser. Once it is released for Windows Mobile, we will certainly be checking it out.
Doug
Thanks, Cools apps
