AT&T Drops the Epix, I Pick It Up!

I have been contemplating a new phone to replace my aging Tilt and I finally took the plunge.  I called around to find out if any local stores has the Samsung Epix in stock and one of our local AT&T stores had one, so I rushed over and picked it up yesterday.

So far it is a very good device.  I was surprised how fast I was able to adapt to the optical mouse.  There is even a shortcut to disable it, but I prefer it now.  Samsung has added a way to change the shortcuts on the built in keys at the bottom of the keyboard in addition to their application that lets you map any program to fn-letter key combination.  It is very nice to be able to hit the Internet key and not be taken to the Media Net homepage if you want to set something like Google to your Pocket IE homepage.

About the size of the device, BGR stated that this thing was big.  By my comparisons, it is roughly the size of the iPhone 3G.  It seems larger because there are no tapered sides.  I will also say that it feels a tad lighter than the iPhone 3G.  There is a bonus to the beefier size…a nice 1800 mAh battery.  I will be putting the battery and the rest of the phone to the test, so keep a watch here for more on the Samsung Epix.  If there is anything you would really like me to cover, leave a note here and I will try to include it in the review.

Seeing as the achilles heel of the Blackjack has been battery life — I’m interested to hear if that has been improved.

I hear the Epix has a huge battery capacity (around 1800) so it should hold up a lot better than the previous versions though I too can’t wait for Brett’s reviews.

I’d love to know if you can still tether it to a laptop to use as a modem just like the original Blackjack.

I just picked one up because II was jonesing for a new phone. only had it an hour, but since I already am familiar with WM6.1 it has veen smooth sailing.

I’ve been trying to figure out why Epix will not let me use wi-fi as the source to download my personal MMS…its something from AT&T that smells just like the monopoly-abuse of power that Microsoft applied on its customers and small competition for many years in the past. ITS A GREAT PHONE IF YOU REALLY KNOW HOW TO USE IT.
