When I first saw this I was thinking the same thing you are right now.  It’s a scam, or it’s a service, or some other ridiculous nonsense like ads bombarding your phone, but Myxer.com seems to be operating above board.  If that’s the case then selection must be horrible; not so at all.   In fact, they do more than just ringtones, and they have some really interesting features that I haven’t seen anywhere else.  All of the content I looked at was free and I can (so far) attest to not being charged a thing for it.

The terms for Myxer do allow for the possibility of becoming a service in the future, but at the same time they also state that they will make it completely obvious when they do, and not automatically include previous users.  They also state that there may be pay content, but again state that this will be obvious, and that there will be no requirement to purchase premium content.  Unlike some similar sites you don’t even need to sign up or create an account on Myxer to download content (you do need to provide your mobile number during the download).

Myxer’s main focus is helping unsigned or independent artists broaden their reach by offering ringtones and wallpapers, but there is much more to the site than just indie artists.  Myxer allows anyone to upload their “own content” to the website so you will find almost anything you can think of there.  They list their catalog as over 300,000 ringtones, and in my looking around I would believe it.

While the content is pretty good, it is the additional tools that really make the site interesting.  They seem to understand the benefit of having the public promote the content, and they provide links to content on the Myxer.com site, as well as a widget called MyxerTags that allow you to embed a favorite tone on your own pages.

Each piece of content also gets its own MyxerCode which allows a user to text the service to get a new ringtone.   This is where I started to take the site more seriously.  If you look at the intended angle of the site and its effort to promote indie artists you can see that the service is geared toward their needs.  You are an artists doing a local show and after the show you give out MyxerCodes to your fans as a way to promote (or eventually sell) your music and brand.  It really makes a lot of sense.

The site also offers quite a few ways to create and edit your own ringtones even if you are not an artist.  I thought they were even easier to use than doing it with another program.  I used the tools to make two songs into ringtones and was pretty impressed with the ease at which I could do it.  It was at least as easy as using a desktop program, and had almost the same features, through the web no less.

My main issue with the site was the four step process to get a ringtone.  First you have to find or make the ringtone you want (unless you see a MyxerTag or MyxerCode somewhere), then you have to wait for a text message to arrive to tell you how to get it.  Then the text message has a link that you have to download the ringtone from, and after that you finally get to save the file.  It seemed artificially convoluted to me, but I guess there is a business model in there somewhere.

All in all though I thought Myxer was a pretty good site and offered quite a bit of interesting content for free.  I also like the idea of helping indie artists play on a level field with more popular ones, and as long as the service does not go the way of some of it’s competitors It will be at the top of my list when I need a new ringtone.

Nice overview, Brian. This looks (and sounds) like a fantastic service.
