Freeware Square (August 2008): A Monthly Roundup Of Free Software For Windows Mobile
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Hopefully you are enjoying this monthly feature called Freeware Square. In it, I cover some useful freeware that you can install on your Windows Mobile device. If you have any recommendations that you would like to see here, feel free to drop me an email. So which 5 made it to the list this time around?
Nope it doesn’t give your enemy black eyes. Nor that bully who stole your lunch money. Instead this is one application that’ll help you save some juice by turning off the screen of your phone when you’re in a call. It does not just work for calls because you could turn off (blank) your screen for just about any reason including listening to MP3s where you don’t need to see the display.
This application is maximized when you bind it to a softkey (although you don’t need to). That way, when a call comes in, you can just press the assigned key to blank the screen. Pressing the Action key on your DPAD (the middle button) brings the screen back to life.
One Today screen not enough for you? Or maybe you want one for all your PIMs and another one that you can show off to your friends what your Windows Mobile device is capable off. Alright, I admit that was not a great example but if you have a need for more than one Today screen, here’s a solution for you (and it does not include buying an additional Pocket PC).
mToday is a very light application that allows you to switch between two Today screen profiles easily. It is rather limited because not all plugins support this application (such as the default Date/Time plugin) and you’ll be using the default Today settings to rank your plug-ins. However, consider that it’s the first release, hopefully that will change in the future.
Are you on the lookout for a property and located in the US? If you answered yes then Property Maps Mobile is an application you’ll want to check out. Once installed, it allows you to search MLS properties listed by virtually all retailers from all firms. It’ll even give you information on a property if you want to know about it; all from your Pocket PC. Take a look at the screen shot to see what I mean.
Tempted? Then be sure to click on the download link below. I have used this several times in my pursuit of the house of my dreams but so far, I have not gotten the results I expected. I am not sure if it’s due to my location (Philadelphia, PA) or a problem with the server but users in other regions seem to be having a better experience with it.
Ever wish you could find out where your friends were without having them fire up their navigation application to do so? Well then you’ll want to check out Phonetracker Locator. To use it, you’ll need a device that comes with a built-in GPS chip (which is getting pretty common these days) or one that connects to a GPS receiver. There’s nothing really complicated about it. It’s got a really simple interface and does just one thing: to transmit the location of the device to whoever requests for it. Just install and you are ready to go. To find that device’s location, you’ll just have to send a text message from any phone to that device with the message *PHONETRACKER* and it’ll reply to the requester with the information needed. But this is a 2 part software which means you’ll need another application to utilize that information and that software is called:
You can consider this the receiving application which makes sense of the message you’ll receive. It’ll open up Google Maps Mobile (which you’ll want to install beforehand) and route you to that device. Or if you just want to get the position of that device without being routed, you can do that too.
As you can probably tell, this 2 part application is more for a user who wants to keep track of other users, such as a mom on her son. However, you can also use it to trade positions with friends to find (and meet up with) each other though you’ll have to install both portions of the applications.

Hi Tariq
I need your help.I got a problem here.Perhaps if you would be kind to provide me with your technical advice,Please.
With regards to your site on the PhoneTracker Locator & the PhoneTracker4Free,I’m unable to perform a simple Installation. What could simply be wrong with it? You mentioned a simple/direct installation process. But not quite so for me,though. Are these two programs compatible with my device? Please help.
I own a 02 xda flame pda.It’s running on WM5.
Hi Sky
I did not encounter any problem when I tried it out back then and I don’t think there should be any problem with your device seeing as to how it supports WM5.
Does your Flame have built in GPS? If it does, you might want to contact the developer and see what is the problem. My guess could be resolution though I think the developer would be in a better position to answer that.
