Fuze Owners: How Is Your Reception?

Status_Notification

I have been waiting for the Fuze/Touch Pro since it was announced.  So naturally, when it finally launched on AT&T, I picked one up on launch day.  In general, I find that it is a great Windows Mobile device with an amazing screen.  All is not so good though…the signal strength is absolutely horrible.  I mean this is the worst I have ever seen.  My iPhone gets 2-3 bars more than the Fuze.  Now I know that bars differ from device to device…but my Fuze constantly drops the data connection and cannot get one back or drops to Edge.  I also know that it is not AT&T because my iPhone will be cruising along with 3G still streaming Pandora like a champ.

So, just before I left for my Thanksgiving vacation, I returned my Fuze and picked up a replacement to see if it was a bad unit.  So far…same results.  So, on Sunday, I finally installed a new radio based on a XDA-devs thread that the users voted gave them the best results.  This radio is at least as bad, maybe worse.  I am really tempted to return the Fuze for good…because let’s be honest…if your phone can’t keep a connection, what good is having a fancy screen and options to run multiple web browsers?

So, is anyone else having these issues with the Fuze?  Have you tried a different radio?  Have you tried a different Fuze?

Having read all of the issues folks are having with their TPs in the USA and having none of those issues left uncured (ie., no apparent hardware issues) I have decided to keep my Fuze. The signal strength, however, is below that which I regularly experienced with my Tilt.

But I also have to say that my Fuze signal strength was better than all of my family’s iPhones (3G and EDGE) when we were together last week for Thanksgiving. Yes, they ALL have iPhones. I am the black sheep of the family. ;-)

Oh, now this isn’t what I want to hear when I’m only a couple weeks from getting a Fuze!!

Hopefully this can be fixed by HTC quickly if it is indeed a software/driver glitch.

The same places that my iPhone 3G has full bars, the Fuze gets 2 bars, but the data session keeps ending over and over again. I don’t know if that is radio related or if it could be software. I never had this issue running the same software on my Tilt though.

To be fair though, I haven’t heard of anyone reviewers saying that the Fuze signal strength is bad. Everything I have read so far has been positive. Of course I have gone through 2 devices and 2 radio versions, so I’m at a loss.

Just received my Touch Pro and yes, compared to my iMate 8502 reception is about 2 notches down in exactly the same circumstances.

totally agree, in 5 countries this past 2 weeks and on every band it is worse than my nokia n95-8gb by a substantial margin. Cell reception is weak at best. The N95 locks to wifi spots that don’t even register on the Fuze. I also find the whole wifi options and setting things silly – do we really need 3-5 different places to set up connections (Wi-Fi, Wireless Lan, Wireless Manager, Connections). I use it strictly for corporate (WinMo security apparently) so I can’t hack the crap out of it with cooked ROMs and such but I think the average user is not going to risk warranty and service from the telcos for a possible millisecond of response time improvement.
I am keen to know if an unlocked unit has better cell reception (with or without a cooked ROM).

Well I unlocked my Fuze and installed the latest Quartz radio available on XDA. It has made a ton of difference. I would say I get 2 bars more and it has not dropped the data connection once in 2 days. It still does not quite match my Tilt’s reception, but it is close enough that I am going to keep my Fuze now for sure.

My Fuze also has terrible reception.

where do I go to get the latest quartz radio for my fuze?
