HTC Touch Now Available At Verizon

Well, as has been rumored for some time now, the HTC Touch was released on Verizon’s network today with the wildly creative name, XV6900.   The XV6900 is available directly from Verizon, and costs $299.99 before the on-site rebate.  And yes, it is THAT white.

In addition to the new, white color, other specs include:

  • EV–DO, 1X RTT Capable (can this possibly be correct, 1x is the extremely slow version of EV-DO
  • Windows Mobile® 6 Professional (no word on a Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade for early adopters)
  • Microsoft® Office Word Mobile, Excel® Mobile, and PowerPoint® Mobile; Adobe® Reader® LE PDF viewer
  • View, edit, create Word and Excel files; view only PowerPoint and PDF files; view, extract, create ZIP files
  • Internet Explorer® Mobile
  • Windows Media® Player 10
  • Memory: 128MB RAM/256MB ROM (that is an absolute ton of memory)
  • Bluetooth® Wireless Technology (v2.0)
  • 2.8″ Display: 240×320 pixel; 64K color TFT
  • TouchFLO® technology allows finger and stylus input
  • 5–way ENTER/NAVIGATION button
  • Virtual, all–touch QWERTY keyboard with additional input options
  • 2.0 megapixel camera with auto–focus, zoom and video capture
  • microSD™ memory support (up to 8GB)

The HTC Touch has been a wildly popular phone on virtually every network, and I think this will prove to be a good move for Verizon.  My only question is what took them so long…oh and what is with that white color?

Well, about the white: If it is the same finish as my T-Mobile Touch (Enhanced) I had my doubts too: Does it look plastic/cheap? Is the gloss white not very prone to scratching?
I have been using it for months now and it is NONE of the above: The case, allthough glossy white, is very scratch resistant (Dropped it on the concrete a few times) and it looks beautiful, allthough that is a matter of personal taste, of course.

I prefer the soft touch paint that is on many devices today. The back of my Touch Cruise has it and it makes a device a pleasure to hold. I suppose that all-plastic case can be a bit slippery at times (at least from my past experiences with all plastic cases).

“EV–DO, 1X RTT Capable (can this possibly be correct, 1x is the extremely slow version of EV-DO”

I think that means it just supports 1xEV-DO where it’s available and will fall back to 1xRTT where it’s not.

Also, “1x” is not a slower version of EV-DO. As shown above, EV-DO is shorthand for 1xEV-DO. See Wikipedia, for example.

Thanks, Pony. You are correct. There is 1x RTT, 1x EVDO (also known as EVDO Rev 0), but I think you are forgetting about EVDO-RevA, which I thought Verizon had implemented in some of its phones (I know Sprint has). EVDO Rev-A is significantly faster than EVDO Rev 0, and I was surprised Verizon had not used it on the Touch (Sprint didn’t either, but the Sprint Touch came out before they upgraded their full network to make Rev A available.)

Doug

No, I didn’t forget about EV-DO Rev. A (or B or C). The device didn’t seem to support it, so there wasn’t any reason to mention it.

I don’t know whether Verizon is including EV-DO Rev. A support in any of their Windows Mobile devices. Unless I’m mistaken, the only EV-DO Rev. A devices they sell are the air cards for laptops.
