Welcome back to Part VII of our 8 week series on various registry tweaks that can be done on your WM5/6 device (I certainly do apologize for taking so long for this release). This week we will be taking a look at some miscellaneous tweaks. As I have quite a few of tricks up my sleeves, this series will be divided into two part series.
Just remember, you will need a registry editor like Total Commander or PHM Registry Editor in order to implement these modifications.
Note: Some users have commented that the exact location of registry keys differ. What is documented here will give you an approximate location of where they should be located, but you may need to explore around to find what needs to be changed.
Customize startup programs
- In this registry key you can find all the items that appear in the ‘New’ menu on the Today screen:
- [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Extensions\NewMenu]
- These are the programs that automatically start when performing a soft reset:
- [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Start Items]
- [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Start Items]
Change the Softkey Buttons (WM5)
- Create the following keys and Strings in the registry
- [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\112]
- [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\113]
- For each key create a new string named Default and name the button.
- Example:
- Default Notes
- For each key create a new string named Open and set the target path
- i.e. \Windows\notes.exe
- Default Notes
- Example:
Move “My Documents” to a SD Storage Card (I have yet to get this one working properly on my device)
- [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services]
- Modify\Create the following:
- String: FileSyncPath, Value: \SD Card\My Documents
- Create a root folder on storage card named: My Documents
- Modify\Create the following:
Suggest More Words
- [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sip] DWORD Name: SuggWords Value:
- Choose preferred number of suggested words (default is 4, you can choose 0 to 6)
- Choose preferred number of suggested words (default is 4, you can choose 0 to 6)
Change ringtone location
- HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring\
- Edit directory registry key from “Windows” to “Storage Card”
- Place ringtones into Storage Card
Next week will be my final post on “Make your device work for YOU!” series. Make sure you check back for some more miscellaneous tips and tricks next week.
As a preview for what’s to come, as I end this series, I will introduce a way for you to be able to use Asian SIP in WM 5/6.
