No April Fools: Windows Mobile 6.1 to Launch April 1.
Well, it looks like we are not the only ones launching on April 1. According to Internet rumors, Windows Mobile 6.1 is expected to start rolling out of Redmond on April 1 as well. Why April 1, you may ask? That is the official start date of CTIA, and Robbie Bach, the head of the Microsoft division that oversees Windows Mobile is scheduled to be the keynote speaker. Hit the jump to see what you might expect from the new ROM.
Among other things, the considerably less that secret new Windows Mobile ROM is expected to include:
- A significantly improved web browsing experience with improved zooming and scrolling
- Vista-like UI
- copy/paste from PIE
- new fonts
- Wifi indicator
- better task manager
- and the list goes on.
Well keep our ears on the proverbial train tracks and let you know if we hear anything more. Of course, even if Windows Mobile 6.1 is released, that does not mean you can expect an upgrade right away. That will be up to your carrier and device manufacturer.
I’m not holding my breath on getting this new ROM anytime soon on my Mogul, considering they just gave us the new ROM with GPS and EVDO-Rev A a few weeks ago.

I’m also not expecting anything anytime soon. I got my device from Orange in the Netherlands, and they’re not the fastest when it comes to releasing ROM updates. I’m not sure if I remember correctly, but I believe there never was an update for the Wizard at all. And to make things worse, Orange Netherlands was purchased by T-Mobile, so why would T-Mobile still give updates for Orange devices? Or of course they should give me a T-Mobile ROM now, which would be a bit weird since I do have an Orange contract.
