Nvidia next up to reface Windows Mobile

… and it could be the best job yet. You might remember from the demo at Mobile World Congress in February that Nvidia was entering the Mobile Processor space and it was definitely newsworthy, but it wasn’t Windows Mobile newsworthy until now. Crave is reporting that not only is Nvidia going to put their new APX 2500 chips into upcoming Windows Mobile handsets, but that luscious UI they showed in the demo is going to be a cover for some version of Windows Mobile (a la HTC’s Touch 3D). My guess is that it will most likely be Windows Mobile 7 since the rumored enhancements seem to go along well with what was shown in the demo.
When they made the announcement at MWC I definitely noticed, but figured as many others did that it would go into some sort of an Android handset since Nvidia is on the board for the Open Handset Alliance (the Android marketing department). This doesn’t seem to be the case… at least at this point. Much like HTC’s latest statement that they are still committed to Windows Mobile in the near term; Nvidia is working to bring this chip to market in a Windows Mobile device, and will be reviewing Android at a later date. Apparently they think that their chip is too high-end for Android right now.
Between HTC, Sony, and now Nvidia it is looking like I need to start making some room in the device cabinet, there may be some early retirements coming.

Looking forward for NVIDIA to screw us once again like they have done with owners of mobile devices that use the GoForce 5500 GPU. >:(
gmontem,
I know what you mean and felt much the same way with the Intel 2700 graphics chip. Both of them sort of floundered because no applications took advantage of the capabilities of the chip, but if the press releases are to be believed this latest offering from Nvidia could be different in a lot of ways.
For one the ability to output 720p through HDMI is almost enough to sell me right there.
The biggest thing that I am impressed with is that it is a completely integrated chip with processor, radio, and graphics all interwoven together much like what Qualcomm is doing with their enhanced chipets. Qualcomm though didn’t complete the integration which is something that Nvidia says they are committed to so this would mean that even if a developer doesn’t directly code for the chipset the graphics enhancements will still be used directly by the OS.
It also means that there are no “add-on” drivers needed (do you hear this HTC) to get the performance as the processor will access the graphics engine directly.
I will say that if this turns out to be another fiasco I will end up in the jaded club as well
