Announced back in February to be the first Windows Mobile phone with 5 bands UMTS on board, it was also the first to actually work with T-Mobile 3G’s AWS network. A press release which was slated for November 3rd to announce the American version (X1a) was postponed. I thought it was because SonyEricsson was trying to tweak it to support T-Mobile’s 3G network. Boy, was I wrong.
The press release, uncovered by Engadget earlier today, shows that it will retail for $799 for an unlocked version as initially anticipated by Boy Genius Report. It also confirms that those who were planning to use the X1 with T-Mobile’s 3G network will have to look elsewhere as the X1a will only support a triband UMTS (850/1900/2100) band.
The thing that saddens me most was the fact that I have been waiting for the longest time for the X1. It had everything I wanted: high resolution screen, QWERTY keyboard and support for AWS.
With SE’s announcement today, I am left wondering: what happened to the 5 band UMTS model we were shown back then? Why did SE decide to come up with 2 versions? Will there ever be a 5 band international version? I am sure I am not the only one saddened by this piece of news.
