Shootouts Are Here! Exclusively At My Today Screen!!

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

A lot of you have probably noticed the above graphic hiding out in our sidebar.  Shootouts?  What in the heck is a shootout?  Does this mean MTS is going to go head-to-head, toe-to-toe, in a review battle royale with other sites, like Just Another Mobile Monday?  Uhm…no.  And we will not be meeting anyone at high noon either.  But that really does not tell you what Shootouts are all about.  Keep reading to have all of your questions about this cryptic concept answered.

When we ran the Launch Giveaway, one of the contests asked you to tell us what you wanted to see in this space.  If you were  the editor, what would you put here?  There were a lot of great suggestions, some of which we have already acted upon.  By overwhelming majority, however, the number one suggestion was to do more comparison reviews.  Yeah, you told us, standalone reviews are great, but what we really want to know is how do programs compare with each other?  So, you ask…we answer.

Here is how Shootouts will work, each month, our writers and editors select a category, and then choose two or three programs which represent the selected category.  This month, for example, we will be kicking off the series with a weather Shootout, looking at FizzWeather, Spb Weather, and SBSH Pocket Weather.  Each edition will compare the selected programs, based upon objective criteria.  And of course, we’ll always select a winner each month.

In addition to the regular monthly Shootouts, we will also be featuring some Shootout miniseries.  These will be short groups of shootouts looking at a larger pool of programs.  The first one will be coming from Donghoon, as he takes a multi-part look at SIPs and soft keyboards.  Watch for a post coming soon asking for your nominees.

So, there you have it.  You asked for more head-to-head reviews with a definitive suggestion, and we bring you the Shootout.  Coming soon, exclusively at My Today Screen!

Dang! I like the sound of this. Which weather prog will end up on Boot Hill? How about adding WeatherPanel to the Shoot Out list? It is already at Boot Hill, but it still can mix it with the newest weather progs out there! Yee-haa!

Nice one Doug :)

You’re welcome, partner. :-)

@ Mr. E, I looked at Weather Panel when I was picking which programs to include. Unfortunately, a line had to be drawn. Still, Weather Panel would be high on my list for Weather Programs part II. :)

@Lauren, you are always one of my favorite people to write a review with. :)

So true. Sadly, WeatherPanel is only kept alive by an enthusiastic group of users, the developers having long since disappeared. Still, I rate it as about the best weather prog ever, and the others still have to reach what it can do.
That aside, I am looking forward to your “shootouts” in the months to come. Great idea and proof that this site listens to what the pundits want!

There are some concerns about WeatherPanel, regarding the change by Weather.com to quit invalid downloads starting May 6th. So people are questioning if WP will continue working after that date.
(Found out about that here http://forums.sbsh.net/index.php?showtopic=21797&hl=weather\.com )

@SPM, thanks for that info. I was not aware of the changes to weather.com.

@Mr. E., we always listen. :) And I am happy to post about anything Windows Mobile related that you all are interesting in hearing more about.

I encourage everyone to use the Skribit board in the sidebar. If there is a specific program you want to learn more about, or something you like that you think deserved to be shared, or anything else. Put it in the Skribit box.

I like this idea Doug………

Thanks, PPCTechs. :)

Let me know if you have any ideas for a Shootout involving some of your products. We’d be happy to take a look. :)
