Some of you may have missed this among all of the iNews about the iPhone today (and even I have to admit that 3G iPhone is a pretty impressive piece of work), but Samsung officially announced the i900 Omnia today.  And really, this is one impressive phone.  The Omnia features:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1-
  • Quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE support
  • 7.2Mbps HSDPA
  • a built-in accelerometer (does anyone know what that does??)
  • WiFi module
  • USB port
  • FM tuner
  • Bluetooth
  • 3.2-inch 400 x 240 resolution display
  • A 5-megapixel camera (with smile detection and geotagging).

There is an 8GB and a 16GB version, and both shoudl include Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface. No word yet on pricing or availability, but there are reports that some parts of Europe may start to see this one in July.

The built in accelerometer is used to sense screen orientation and movement of the phone (just like the iPhone).

Thanks, Matt. I suppose I could have looked that up. :) But I appreciate your clarification. I guess that also means that if I get the Omnia up to 88 mph then it probably will not time travel like the Flux Capacitor either….

Doug

I guess it won’t Doug. But here are some additional specs that increases the appeal:

1. It’ll come with GPS (I almost did not consider this because sites I went to did not report the feature but PDADB.net did so I’m keeping my fingers crossed).

2. It has haptic feedback which means when you tap the screen, there would be haptic feedback which are vibrations to let you know that your taps have been registered.

3. It uses a capacitive touch screen which is what the iPhone uses. Multi-touch capable I assume?

No word on the US version but it’s going to be released in Asia from June 17 with the 16GB priced at SGD1098 (about USD748). That’s almost 3 times the original price of the Apple iPhone 3G so hopefully that would be worked out by the time it gets here.
