Time To Get An iPhone?

Apple iPhone 3G If you were following Day 1 of WWDC 2008 like I was, you would have known by now that the next generation of iPhone, the iPhone 3G as they call it, has officially been announced.

It’ll come in 3 versions come July 11th, the 8GB which goes for $199, the 16GB priced at $299 and the 32GB which you feel $399 lighter. The 16GB version will also come in white for those who do not like black.

It’s packed with 3G (hence the name) as well as GPS (coupled with AGPS for a quicker lock). And don’t forget the apps that were shown during the event. There was not even a hint of lag on it. What’s more, it’s packed with 5 hours of talk time when in 3G mode.

Now compare that to the HTC Diamond which is most similar in specs to the iPhone 3G. I’ve always been a advocate of buying a device that suits your needs and the iPhone 3G as well as the Diamond would suit a buyer looking at either. Which do you think he would choose?

Which would you choose? Why?

Update: There is no 32GB version of the iPhone 3G. Specs confirmed on the iPhone Technical Specs page.

32G? Where did you see that? It’s 8 gig black and 16 gig black or white. No mention of 32 gig.

It was announced during the event. But you can check out Apple Store to see what I mean.

This is from the US apple store website

“iPhone will be available in 8GB (black) and 16GB (black or white) models1 at Apple Retail Stores and AT&T Stores.”

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone?mco=MTE2NTQ

I was listening to the keynote I didn’t hear 32Gig but there was allot of applause noise on my audio feed.

I got the info from iPhone Buzz who were covering the event. Check it out here:

http://live.iphonebuzz.com/

The 32GB was mentioned at 11:46am which was around the time the room erupted in applause.

Just checked Apple iPhone’s Technical Specs page and it does not list a 32GB version. My apologies for that.

All things considered, I would probably go for a 32 GB iphone. But I would prefer not to go with AT&T. If I could get this on Sprint I would probably be standing in line right now.

Sorry Adam but there is no 32GB version as I had mentioned earlier. I guess the reported got it wrong with all the noise and applause.

Does the 3G iPhone allow tethering of a computer for internet access?

I know that having the whole internet available on the phone is nice, but when I’m traveling I really like to use my computer for computer purposes, and I tether it to my windows mobile phone for internet access.

Wim.

I don’t think it allows that and I am not sure if it does. I guess in your case, the iPhone is not for you.

It will be very interesting to see what this does for pricing of the Diamond and other higher end WM phones. $199 is awfully cheap for a phone like that.

Doug

Definitely Doug. At $199, it’s really cheap for a smartphone. Hopefully the price of smartphones drops to something comparable as well. It would also be interesting to see what the price of Google Android’s devices will be.

If the HTC Diamond went for $199, I’d probably consider it. Right now my next device is looking like an HTC TyTN II, but if I could get the next level up for $199, I’d really consider it over an iPhone. Real keyboard vs. touch screen everything. I have a bunch of WM software already and don’t want to repurchase it.

Also, XDA Developers is pretty awesome and helps out when the carriers no longer support the device - no major worries about tweaking the OS on an iPhone and having it break next major release. :)

My new phone will be the Raphael. If the iphone came to sprint, I would be solely tempted but I could barely buy one line at AT&T what I am paying for four at Sprint. (thanks Sprint!)

Yeah, I am pretty married to Sprint as well. So, no iPhone for me. But I may look at the Diamond or Raphael. Or go completely off the wall and buy an Android. :)

Doug
