Weekly Windows Mobile Roundup On April 19 2008
I have been doing the weekly news roundup for two weeks now and after some discussions with Doug, we’ve decided to change things a bit. We still be covering articles that we missed earlier on in the week in this article but since it’s a weekly news roundup, why stop there right?
So instead, we’ve decided to also list the headlines of the news that we’ve covered. Not excerpts, just the headlines linking to the original article so those of you who missed it will also get a chance to go back to it. Great isn’t it? But we’re not quite done yet…
We’ve also decided to highlight the reviews that were done up in the past week. Like the news articles, these would just be the title of the post linking back to the main article. So what do you think? Let us know in the comments below. And now for the news:
Internet Sharing via WiFi
There used to be a software that allows you to share you mobile data connection over WiFi but the sad thing is that freeware is now a commercial software. I thought all was lost but thanks to the good folks over at XDA Developers Forum (what would we do without them), they’ve now created a new application that allows you to do just that (and more actually). For starters, you can share your 3G connection over WiFi. But why stop there? It also does sharing of that same 3G over Bluetooth and USB if you wanted. Basically, it helps you share your connection in just about any means you need. So if this sounds like the application for you, be sure to check it out. (via XDA Developers Forum)
Pre-Order Your Celio RedFly
Can’t wait to get your hands on the Celio RedFly? Then head over to www.getredfly.com to place your order. It’s $499 for the unit plus shipping. Depending on where you are, that could set you back a lot (Paul from MoDaCo has to pay $99 for shipping to the UK). The RedFly is a light and compact device that connects to your Windows Mobile device so that you can use it’s keyboard for data entry or transfer data between your portable hard disk and phone. With 8 hours of battery life and booting in seconds, it’s definitely made for the road warriors among us. Oh and in case you are wondering, there is no firm date on when it will be shipped but they did mention soon, so who knows? (via ModaCo)
CorePlayer Updated To v1.2.3

Didn’t they just had an upgrade released recently? Well, that does not mean that they can’t release another shortly after right? With this new version comes several improvements and additions such as SDP file support, CPU load balance in CoreAVC and the option to restore playback when put in the foreground. The full list can be found here if you are keen.If you are a user of CorePlayer, be sure to grab your download here. (via SolSie.com)
Could This Be Aliph’s Jawbone 2?
It most probably is and Engadget says that it should be arriving soon. They claim that is has lost some wieght though I am I can’t really tell from the picture. Another improvement they claim is the new connector (which you can’t see from the picture). I had no problem with the connector on the unit that I reviewed at Eten Blog but I did hear cases of earlier models being problematic. If that’s the case, then hopefully this new connector solves that.
No news yet on when this plans to hit the market or what designs/colors are available but do stay tuned as I am just as curious about it as you are. Will they add a volume down button this time around? (via Just Another Mobile Monday)
Proporta’s New Generic Case
Do you always go out and buy a new case for your device when you get a new one? How much is that costing you? If you’re one who keeps changing device but do not want to shell out good money for a unique case for each of your toys, then Proporta’s new generic case might be just the thing for you.
It’s got all the characteristics of Proporta such as the strong magnetic closure system and a quality leather case. It comes in 3 sizes, small, medium and large. Each has has a slightly different internal dimension so that you can get a good fit for your device. Each case goes for $25.95 and you can check them out here.
First Windows Mobile Wrist Watch Phone?
I guess so because I have not heard or seen anything like it. The EPOQ EGP-WP98 is a wrist match as well as a Windows Mobile device which I guess makes it the smallest WM device ever? Specifications of such a device are rather impressive with WiFi B/G, WM5, Quad-band GSM and 1.3MP camera among others. Oh and I guess it’s also the first water-resistant Windows Mobile device
Granted it’s nothing to scream about but if you are looking to carry one less device with you when you head out, this might be worth checking out. It retails for $629.95 and you can only get it from Gadget Craver after April 25th. (via Gear Diary)
Dual-SIM Devices Anyone?
HKC, no not HTC, but HKC, has just launched what is probably the world’s first (seems to be a lot of world’s first news today eh?) dual SIM Windows Mobile phone. Specifications are alright with 256MB ROM and 64MB RAM though it uses a 200MHz Qualcomm CPU which I am not too keen about. What’s even worse (in my opinion) is that there is no 3G or WiFi on board. I hope there’s at least GPRS. The saving grace of these devices (yes there are 2) is that they allow you to use 2 SIM cards at the same time be it 2 GSM ones (one for AT&T and another for T-Mobile) or one for GSM and another for CDMA. I guess only world travelers need to take note then. (via IntoMobile)
V2R PhotoViewer Debuts
Looking for an application that makes viewing and organizing your photos on your Windows Mobile device a breeze? Then be sure to check out V2R’s new release of PhotoViewer. It generates photo albums for you, making it easier to consolidate those photos and you can just as easily add or remove albums to your gallery. What I enjoyed about PhotoViewer (from reading the article) was that it is finger -friendly so you could use your thumb to scroll through the pictures and albums. Currently, the application only supports QVGA WM5/6 Classic and Professional devices, that is those with touchscreens. No word yet on when they plan to support other resolutions or platforms though. V2R PhotoViewer comes with a 5 day trial and retails for EUR7.95. More info here. (via the::unwired)

I like the new idea of linking to the past articles.
Also, I wonder if anyone would actually use a wrist watch phone.. Seems too 007 to me. Hah
Thanks, Becky. It is always a treat to get some positive feedback on the decisions we make.
