Astraware Launches Pocket Express

Astraware Pocket Express

We’ve all come to know of Astraware as one of the leaders when it comes to games for the Windows Mobile platform. So I was rather surprised to see this in my mailbox recently. Apparently Astraware has gone just launched a new application called Pocket Express and it’s nothing like what you’ve come to know from this great company.

For starters, it’s not a game. Rather, it’s an application that provides you with news, sports, weather, travel, maps and more. What’s even better is that it’s all free for the taking. I have yet to give it a go myself but I’ll do just that. If it’s anything like the stuff Astraware has released, it should be just as good. Grab your copy here.

Opera 9.5 Launched

Opera But it seems that it will only be for the upcoming HTC Diamond which is slated to be released next month. No additional news about it but it’s not far-fetched to think that if Opera has decided the next generation of browsers on the HTC Diamond that a public release of this much anticipated browser isn’t too far off. Only question is, exactly how far away?

For those wondering what the big deal is about Opera 9.5, let’s just say you need to read up more. This browser is touted as being even better than the current Safari browser on the Apple iPhone and adds features that its missing. In short, you’ll get something pretty close to desktop IE6. Just how great is this? Maybe this video will show you

HTC Diamond Pre-Order Now Available

HTC Diamond If you can’t wait to get your hands on the Diamond, be it for its slick design or Opera 9.5 browser, then head over to DeviceWire and place your order. Delivery will start from June 9 which is less then 3 weeks away. Prices? Well here’s the kicker: £394.89 (Ex. VAT) / £463.99 (Incl. VAT) or in USD $771 / $906. (via SolSie.com)

Sprint Capping 3G Usage to 5GB?

Sprint I am not a Sprint user though I also found their plans to be rather enticing. But now that they’re planning to put a cap of 5GB on their Unlimited Data Plans, it sure takes some shine away from it. No word yet as to which plans will be affect but for a company that is bleeding customers, many wonder if having such a limit at this time would is a smart move. (via GottaBeMobile)

Palm Treo 850 Shows It’s Face

Palm Treo 850 And it’s a GSM model! Considering how long the Palm Treo 800w from Sprint has taken to be released, it’s anybody’s guess as to when we’ll see the 850 hit the shelves. Then again, this time around, it’s Vodaphone who plan to release it in the summer with the following specs:

  • Quad-band GSM
  • Windows Mobile 6.1
  • 400mhz Processor
  • 100MB RAM
  • 320×320 flush screen
  • 2mp camera
  • 1500 mAh battery
  • GPS, WiFi (with button on the side), Bluetooth 2.0

Definitely one of the devices on my list that I will be eagerly anticipating. Hopefully it comes to the US as well. (via Boy Genius Report)

HTC Releases Kaiser Update

Kaiser users rejoice! HTC has finally released a new ROM (and I think that makes HTC the first to release a WM6.1 ROM among all the manufacturers officially) and it brings with it the much anticipated video graphics fix. According to Paul of MoDaCo:

The update is for HTC TyTN II devices, and will be followed later by a AT&T branded update. The update adds Windows Mobile 6.1 with improvements such as the ‘Getting Started’ wizard, Threaded SMS and general performance and battery life updates, as well as HTC’s ‘video performance’ update. So what’s it like? Performance IS improved, however with no real video acceleration, don’t get your hopes up TOO much!

The ROM is available for HTC e-club members via htc.com so if you have yet to register your device, now would be a very good time to do so. According to Pocket PC Thoughts, the ROM is only available via HTC Europe’s FTP site but it should be on other region’s site shortly. At 66.2MB, it’s no small update but grab a cup of coffee as you download it and breathe new life into a great device. (via Pocket PC Thoughts)

Touch Commander 3.1 Is Out

Touch Commander For those among us who do not have the budget for one of those cool new phones with Touch interface, fret not. Touch Commander 3.1 has just been released and brings with it many new features as well as bug fixes. This utility will give you full finger touch navigation functionality to your Pocket PC and comes with a $29.95 price tag. A 15 day trial is also available for those who want to give it a go. MultiTouch In Windows Mobile?

That could just be a reality, even with the current device(s) you own. No there’s no need for you to swap of the screen for a new one. Just the installation of some nifty software from Flick Software. Don’t believe me? Maybe this video will:

It does look interesting and I hope it’s not only limited to viewing pictures using their own software. It’d definitely be cool to use this for web browsing rather than tapping to zoom in and out. (via WMExperts)

Shadow II And III Coming To A T-Mobile Near You

T-Mobile Between June 16 and August 1st, T-Mobile plans to launch 16 phones, of which 13 of them are already known and 2 of them are Windows Mobile: the Shadow II and Shadow III. No word at the moment on their designs or specs but considering that the date is rapidly approaching, it would not be long before we get more details about it. Launching a II and III very close together does not seem to make sense unless one is a Standard and the other a Professional version. Fingers crossed on this one. (via TmoNews)

Resco Releases Explorer 2008 Beta

Resco Explorer 2008 We’re half way into 2008 and Resco has finally released the anticipated 2008 Explorer. Though still in beta (which I guess it’s free), it boasts a lot of new features which include:

  • Touch control support
  • Virtual Folders with file type filter: You can create virtual folders filtering specific extensions MP3, JPG, MPG, etc.

Pocket Secure v5.0 Released

For those of you looking for a way to secure your devices, be sure to put Pocket Secure v5.0 on your list. It was recently released by Mobile Device Security and claims it to be the ultimate Windows Mobile security. I am not sure how true that claim is as I have not tested it myself but it definitely looks like it’s worth checking out. They also claim that in the unfortunate event that your device is lost or stolen, this application will be the one to protect all your valuable data. Licenses go for $21.95 a piece and you can purchase them at PocketGear or Pocket Secure’s own website. They also have a fully featured 7 day trial available. All registered users can get their Free update from the WebStore at the PS Website.(via 4WinMobile.com)

Security Vulnerability For Windows CE Exposed

Microsoft Still on the subject of security, it seems that there is a security vulnerability for Win CE whereby multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the JPEG (GDI+) and GIF image processing in Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted JPEG and GIF images. More details about it can be found here. Not to worry though because Microsoft has come up with a fix in the form of a patch for it here. If you are such a user, be sure to install it as soon as possible. (via 4WinMobile)
